Michele Campbell: Lost in Interpretation: Persistent Myths, Logical Fallacies, and the Rhetoric of Popular Science Are vaccines safe? Do vitamins improve mental health? Are smartphones damaging our brains? Do tomatoes cure cancer? Click here to find out more! In this class, we will be pursuing an investigation of popular headlines and the research that's lead to persistent science myths in popular culture. Our investigation will cover everything from tabloid news, clickbait advertising, research-based journalism, and contemporary lab research. We will examine how language changes and where the inaccuracies and superstitions creep in, as well as consider why people want news that simplifies scientific facts. Critical analysis. 2. Presentation. 3. Annotated bibliography. 4. Research paper.
